Traditionally, particularly among the Maasai of Kenya, lion hunting was encouraged as a rite of passage for young men into adulthood. Lion hunting symbolized bravery, courage and a way of young warriors to prove themselves as protectors of their community. The Amiiru culturally reference Courage to warriors who protect the community. The cultural items that symbolize courage are spears (ruciu) and shields and they nuance protection and masculinity. Spears and shields are no longer in use in the modern world but they remain powerful symbols of courage, protection and masculinity among the Meru people.
